The Genius of Photography – Fixing the Shadows (I)

“In photography, like in all things, there are people who can see and others who cannot even look.” – Nadar

Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, more commonly known as Nadar, was a French photographer born on the 6th of April 1820, in Paris. In his photographs, Nadar managed to capture picture people in a different way than any other photographer before. Instead of using props and outfits to describe, for example, professions of his subjects, Nadar achieved such representations through people’s postures and their ‘natural’ appearance.

The photograph on the left presents Sarah Bernhardt captured by Nadar in the 19th century.

I have chosen Nadar for this description because I thing he brought irreversible changes to the photography which was to allow people to act more natural in front of the camera rather than just simply posing with a serious expression. In my opinion, Nadar managed to turn photography into work of art through portraying famous actors and people, who were often the main subject of his photographs, in an artistic and meaningful way.
